MyHermes - delivery empty

Hi,

I am a newbie to the forums, but hoping someone can help me.

My parents ordered a new iPhone for my birthday, go this delivered to their house and from there sent this onto me via MyHermes courier – in a well-sealed parcel.

When I received this, one end of the parcel was open and you could clearly see the end of the iPhone box. When opening this, there was nothing inside except for the instruction leaflet.

We logged a claim with MyHermes yesterday and submitted pictures as evidence. They have now come back with a refund of £27, saying that the compensation on package was £20 and they have paid back the postage. The phone is £599!

I am aware that they should have paid the correct compensation for the package, but wanted to know if there was anything that could be done to go back to MyHermes, as the parcel was clearly tampered with during their delivery? I feel really bad that they are now left with paying off a phone which has been stolen.

Any help/advise would be gratefully received!

Cheers,
R

    Sorry read the OP properly.

So they bought it and had it delivered to their house, from which they sent it on to you after failing to get the right amount of insurance?

From where I am I'm afraid it looks like this is down to your parents, Hermes have paid out according to the insurance that was taken out, it is not their fault inadequate insurance was taken. The package was tampered with during their care, but this is why they offer various levels of insurance. I'm sorry but this is how it seems from here.

Maybe someone else might be able to offer further advice

You mean your parents should have paid the correct level of insurance for the product.

    Too late now.

They sent the package without adequate insurance - that's what insurance is for.

Have you reported the phone stolen, have you blocked the IMEI number? If not you need to at least render the phone useless.

Thanks for all your replies. I knew that if the insurance cover didn’t cover the cost of the parcel, then it’s that simple.

    Hard lesson learnt...

Ps. Phone was blocked on day 1!
  • Sorry to hear your story as it's a horrible thing to happen.

For anyone else reading this, please be aware that myHermes (along with all courier companies) has a very long list of items that they will not pay any compensation for in the event of a claim.

The list includes some very common items that people might want to sell on eBay and courier such as cameras, coffee machines, microwaves, TVs, etc. Basically you courier these items at your own risk with no insurance given or implied.

Not likely to help you much, but the theft should be reported to the police if you haven't done so already.

The phone has likely gone overseas but there's a slim chance the police may recover it in the UK at some point in the future...

Wow just actually read that list - Looks like very little of the stuff most people would use MyHermes for is not covered by insurance

    Certainly opened my eyes!

Insurance or no, MyHermes should take this matter seriously. Just because you've not paid the appropriate insurance cover level, doesn't give them free rein to help themselves to goods in transit. A crime has been committed.

I wonder, if you report it to the police and obtain a crime reference number, whether you could claim on your household insurance?
