Hello All
I'm pretty good with gaming PC's but my mate wants a PC for Video Editing and Video Rendering. Im not really sure what to spec out for him so can someone help?
We have a case, a PSU. I also have 16gb of DDR3 Corsair Vengeance RAM. (Is this RAM ok)? I have some SSD's too. They're from an old build.
So i need your help to choose a CPU, Mobo, GPU and whether anymore RAM is required?
I will be buying from the classifieds section so looking at used not new.
Thanks!

A case and a PSU and DDR3, Without knowing what board and CPU you will be buying?
Well DDR3 limits your choice to older stuff.
Is more RAM required depends on how long you want to wait for the video to render and how many videos and what format and whether they are 800x600 or 4k etc..
Before you look at used stuff, check the prices of new stuff also.
Lots of people selling used SSD drives for more than you can buy them new.
I have the R1700 and its a beast when rendering video or 3D stuff. Excellent value. A massive improvement over my ancient AMD 5200 dual core.
I love the US review sites, its just a little more expensive, err an $800 card is not just a little more expensive than a $400 card its a !!!! lot more expensive.
And when its in the UK that $800 card is £800++Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
You will want more RAM, fast CPU, fast graphics card that the video editing software can utilise to speed things up, large amounts of storage.0

Are you talking about causal editing or doing it all the time?
Any budget?0 -
Updated my initial post.
The stuff i have is from an old build
Its casual at moment but ideally will be moving into regular territory.
Is there a huge diff between ddr3 and 4?
I think the i5's still manage ddr3 right?
Will take your advice though and will have a look at some ryzens!
It'll be 2k ish0 -
Video editing and rendering is CPU intensive, so dual Xeons with hyperthreading would be my suggestion.
See if you can pick up a s/h Z800 or similar.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -

The most important factor (and biggest cost) for you will be a decent GPU
You're looking for a A8-7600 with Asus a68HM-K board 8-16gb DDR3 or a Intel G4400 with Gigabyte GA-HH110MS2h 8-16gb DDR4
You need to make sure the PSU you have is a Bronze certified 500w+
In terms of card you're looking at a MSI RX560 Aero ITX 4G OC or better, or a GeForce GTX 1060 or better.
Of course all this depends on budget. This is just a suggested middle of the line system for around 500 bucks.0 -

Are you kidding?
Those CPU are not for video editing!
If OP has to reuse DDR3 RAM, I would say go for B150 chipset DDR3 motherboard and get i7-6700 or i7-77000
