Windows 10 cannot find my Brother printer, plugged into my new Vodafone router

I have been using an HL2250DN Brother laser printer for years, plugged into my router with ethernet cable so I can print to it from my laptop. It worked fine with my Virgin Media router and Sky router, but yesterday I got a new Vodafone router and Windows 10 (from two laptops) now cannot find the printer at all. Does anyone have any ideas how to get it to work?

I checked the printer is switched on (good start) and that the ethernet cable is properly connected to the router. I tried swapping physical router ports and used a second cable, but no good.

I tried Windows 'Add a printer or scanner' and then the follow up option to look for an older printer, but nothing.

I tried the Brother software, but it cannot see the printer.

I tried disabling Windows firewall and anti-virus temporarily, no good.

I looked in the Vodafone router settings and toggled a few including firewall, but no luck.

Any ideas?

  • Attach the printer via usb to a pc, then set up the required ip address for your new network using the brother software. I would guess that your new router uses a different subnet from your old one

Thank you for this, much appreciated. I had also contacted Brother who sent me instructions, which I tried and they worked straight away. I have copied them below in case for reference in case anyone has a similar problem in future.
