My wife and I are getting divorced and she said if I don't agree to her terms then the MIL will stop paying the rent. I thought not a problem as I made it clear to the letting agency that I would only do it for one year.

But then signed something to the contrary?

Standing as a Guarantor can often be the only difference between helping a vulnerable relative to be housed - or them to be homeless.

It can be very difficult to say no to, and sit pretty in your own home, whilst someone you love is homeless, and you could have stopped it.
The opposite of what you know...is also true

So did you sign the guarantor agreement before your marriage turned sour or after?

I'm perplexed by the 1 year thing...it's as if you knew or thought you knew that there may be problems brewing hence you only wanting to be involved for a year.

Or if the letting agency says the liability ends when the tenant leaves the property..... which it doesn't if they leave in a box!

The tenancy doesn’t just end when the tenant dies. You haven’t answered my question about seeing a copy of the tenancy agreement prior to signing the guarantee which was executed as a deed....wasn’t it?

The 1 year things was because of her age, the longer it went on the more likely she was to die as a tenant

Not for a guarantor as the liability doesn't end

Really sorry to hear that, you're stuck in a difficult situation now, one can only hope your Wife and her Mother see sense and dont lower themselves to vile standards.
Once it's all over maybe you'll be better off, she sounds lovely, NOT. :(
