"While your vehicle is off the road, you have 14 days in which to obtain a tax disc or make a SORN."

looks like a grace period to me...

If using the car. not to or from an MOT then you are correct, however a previous poster said it would be flagged immediately as having no tax as soon as it expired

It does if you only read what supports your argument. However, the full quote is:

"You’ll be committing an offence if you use or keep your vehicle on the public road without a current tax disc. If you cannot obtain a tax disc, you must remove your vehicle off the road.
While your vehicle is off the road, you have 14 days in which to obtain a tax disc or make a SORN."

    gosh, pedantic much.

Thanks all for advice. The car is now repaired and all issues have been sorted. Retest booked for tomorrow morning I will get the MOT done and then either go to the post office and MOT it or just keep it on a layby away from ANPR until its marked as MOTd on the website and quickly tax it.
Suppose you were stopped by the police, or had an accident, while "driving around", and charged with having no tax or MOT. Do you think "pedantic" would be a good defence?

No it's pedantic that you clung onto every word of mine and interpreted "driving around" how you want.

Again, I had to put a long !!!! disclaimer on the original post because of users like you who will try to cross examine every word.

I think if you read everything in context it's fairly obvious I am not planning on using the car other than for essential pre-booked appointments to get the mot for the car.

I did read your original post, where you said:

"Rushed around yesterday evening and got them all fixed" and "I can now prebook mechanics and MOT and drive around without police stops leading to seizures."

It may not be what you meant, but it certainly suggests you drove to a garage (or garages) to get repairs, without having a valid MOT.

On the contrary, your link, as explained above, supports my point made in the post you disagreed with.

There is not, nor has there ever been, a 'grace period' for car tax, regardless of what the many disorganised, forgetful people who miss their renewals choose to believe.

Note: I know some people lay down heavy on users, so just for clarification, I decided to take the car to MOT anyway so I could get a list of things to fix, a sort of a to-do list of repairs as I was tight for time.
Given it is illegal to drive it anywhere other than directly to and from a MOT station and legally you cannot even park it on the road you don't have much choice.
Also because it gives me a list of things to get done speicifically so I can now prebook mechanics and MOT and drive around without police stops leading to seizures.

No you can't. You can only drive a car without a MOT to and from a pre-booked MOT. You cannot drive it all over town getting X, Y and Z done at various places. You can't even leave it parked on the road overnight until the re-test.

A few years ago I had the same problem I just waited until the beginning of the month to MOT it and then taxed it. Was never an issue thereafter as I could always tax the car anytime on the run up to the end of the month without worrying about the MOT.

Pre-booked MOT or pre-booked place of repair.
