RBS Debit Card Transactions issue

Some fuel pumps are 'offline' and do what's called a 'pre authorisation' on the card i.e. hold £1. They then 'poll' each night usually between 12-2am. This then processes the full transactions between the terminal and the banks. Because of this it adds a delay, so rather than taking 1-2 days to process with the bank, it can take 2-3 days.
It's not RBS' fault this would happen with any bank. It's down to the pump terminal itself you are using to make the card payment. It's old technology and been superseded for a while now.
The only ones who use these type of transactions these days with good reason are on aeroplanes, trains and cruise ships.0 -
I went over my overdraft by about £14 last week and paid some money in by 2pm to cover it as told to do so in the text and email alert I got from RBS. Noticed today on my online banking statement that I have been charged £64 in fees for going over. What a joke.0

£64 for being £14 overdrawn? On a Select account that would be an £8 fee - how many times were you overdrawn in the month? RBS say: "You pay overdraft fees 16 days after we issue your statement. For example, if your statement is issued on the 1st of the month you will be charged on the 17th. This is the same day your account fees will go out.". So this charge is probably for something older.
If this happens a lot, keep better track of your spending, or consider an arranged overdraft. Alternatively switch banks. Bank of Scotland is cheaper for short, low amount unauthorised overdrafts:

Yes it must be from a previous month where I had gone overdrawn a couple of times too but £64 + £6 usage + £2odd interest is ludicrous. I've been overdrawn in the passed and the fees have only ever been like £8 + interest.
I do have a £250 overdraft with them and they seem to be charging me £6 a month for that too. I've taken my eyes off the ball to much since going paperless.
I'm actually in the process of switching to Starling Bank and hopefully my salary will hit my Starling account on Friday if the incompetent HR department at work have updated my details which they have had for ages now, then I can pension off my RBS account.0
