Expat car insurance for car in the UK

Hi everyone

I have a slightly complicated situation, nothing dramatic, but advice would be much appreciated.

I am working abroad for a couple of years on a temporary contract. My mum, who lives in the UK, is unable to drive for a while due to cataracts. She doesn't want to sell or mothball her car, so she was thinking of signing it over to me so I can insure it and drive it when I'm home (on average one weekend per month or thereabouts). This is all fine with me, but I'm not too sure about addresses on insurance. I can't get anywhere on comparison sites without a UK address, so the obvious thing to do would be to put my mum's address since the car is kept there (and will be since I usually stay there when I'm in the UK), and I'll be the only one driving it until her eyesight is sorted, at which point I'll sign it back over to her. The thing is since I don't technically *live* there per se, would that constitute fraud? Obviously I don't want to get in trouble but it's such a hassle going round individual insurers who specialise in expat insurers, when I could just go on a comparison site.

Cheers!

No harm in just parking it up.

  • Why not just get your name added to the insurance?

Your mum could try this ^^

While not exactly the same circumstances as OP's, my son lives and works in Hong Kong. When he visits UK I get him added to my policy and lend him my car. I always do this by phone & tell the insurance the truth about where he lives currently.
  • Hi, thanks for the replies. So:
Why not just get your name added to the insurance?

Two reasons: time and money. The way things are, she might be out of it for a while (i.e. over a year) so the named driver actually being the only driver over that period of time is bending the rules a little too much for my liking. Second, either of us on a single-user policy costs about 400 without a named driver, but adding me as a named driver to her policy for some ludicrous reason costs an extra 200 quid (on all the comparison sites).
