  • They may not be able to "detect" it but they normally take details off you when you buy anything with a TV tuner in it and these have to be sent off to TV licensing - chances are you gave them "home" details rather than "uni" details though.

They did this to me in Argos last night when I was buying a freeview box. I always give an old address anyway because I don't want junk mail etc. Thing was one letter of the postcode had changed and they would not sell me it because it would not come up. Computer says no.

It really annoyed me because I could have given false details anyway. Or it could have been a gift. They just kept on tapping it in. Im sure if I refused to give my address they would have refused to serve me.

    Crazy.

    And your point is?
  • P.S. discontinued model and is now out of stock nationwide. Great deal though.

Im looking at the HP Pavillion DV9574 almost identical spec for £850.

You gave a false address "to avoid junk mail" and got caught out.

Yes they would have refused to serve you. They are under an obligation to follow the law.

So I still do not understand your point. What are you trying to say?

I dont think thats true. If you have a TV at home but no aerial you dont afaik need to pay a TV licence. You can use it for watching DVDs and playing games.

How do you know its out of stock Nationwide? Just because the website says it is? I was told on the phone the stores may have it but Id have to physically go and check.

The TV licencing is discussed here:

    http://thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=468388&page=3

    and here:

    http://forums.multiplay.co.uk/printthread.php?threadid=33068&perpage=30&pagenumber=2

The conclusion is it is legal as long as you dont use it to get TV and tell them that in writing.

They didn't catch me out, the postcode had changed by one letter so they accepted the old address when they searched it manually.

My point is its a flawed system that can easily be by passed, and wastes peoples time. Bit like your constant asking for an explaination when you know fine well what the point was....:p

I called and was told it was unavailable nationwide. Just called again and double checked and they said they cant tell me if its out of stock nationwide. So you're correct they may have a few left. I was misinformed. Best ring and check your area.
