NPOWER & Westcot up to their old tricks again!

My son was in rented accommodation and left 4 1/2 years ago. At the time he settled his NPower bill and thought that was it.
Unfortunately 18 months ago he was approached by Westcot chasing an unpaid bill for a period immediately after he had vacated the property.
He chased this up with Westcot and NPower, provided all the evidence of having paid the bill and they said that was the end of the matter. Unfortunately he got nothing in writing.
Roll on to this week and Westcot have contacted both him and me (they have my telephone number somehow as a contact for him) chasing the debt once again.
He has unfortunately moved bank accounts and no longer has proof of his last payment and is unable to find the email he sent to NPower to prove he settled the bill.
We will be trying to contact his old landlord to find out the date he moved out but NPower should have a record of his last payment and closing the account.
Any advice will be welcome - he has already raised a formal complaint with NPower but I am not hopeful this will achieve anything
