About 3 weeks ago I started getting a chest infection and it was so bad the doctor gave me a week off. When I sent my main manager Sam the note. she was ok with it. Then I returned to work the following week, only to receive a letter from my company saying I will need to have a Disciplinary taken out on me because I was off sick, I should attend a meeting which would be held at my work on Monday the 30th October 2017 at 4:00pm. Now 4:00pm is when I start work, so I arrived at work for 3:30pm, no sign of the manager Louise who is supposed to be doing my hearing, the supervisor had to wait around as she had to take notes and be a witness. 4:30pm came and no communication from Louise or Sam about it being canceled at 5:00pm we decided to call Sam, for her to tell us that the hearing will have to be rescheduled because Louise couldn't find our building that we work in???
My question is, because of this would I be able to reject any future meetings since this really isn't a valid excuse is it? got lost? like really?

What does your organisation's discipline policy say about meetings being rescheduled?
I doubt you would be entitled to reject any future meeting based on a manger's previous non-attendance. I would try and get the reason minuted at the next meeting if I thought I needed to rely on procedural incompetence to appeal any adverse decision.Originally Posted by shortcrust

Its probably just company policy. A lot of people seem to think that being genuinely sick with a sick note means you cant get into trouble. Also no need to tell us your managers name.0

Of course it is a valid reason - people have been known to get lost, you know? No you can't refuse to attend a disciplinary meeting that your employer calls. You may postpone it for a short time if you have good reason to, such as to arrange your representative, but if you refuse to attend that is refusing a reasonable instruction, and something for which you may be dismissed.0 -
I guess it depends on the contract with the employer and previous sickness record, but can you really have a disciplinary for being off sick for a week ? What happens if you are sick again, just loose your job after 3 meetings ?!
You will need to attend any hearing that you are formally invited to.0 -
Pretty standard at a lot of places that HR organise a meeting with anyone who has been off sick, they stick it under the tittle of disciplinary ‘just in case’0

YesWhat happens if you are sick again, just loose your job after 3 meetings ?! Quite probably yes - sickness absence policies are common and provided they have one and follow it, then you can be dismissed..0

Most organisations will have 'Return to Work' interviews or similar after most, if not all, periods of sickness absence. That is completely normal. I suspect the OP has had more than just this period of sickness if the disciplinary process is being activated.
Although the actual events turned into something of a fiasco, and doesn't say much for the quality of management, it is unlikely to have any bearing on the disciplinary process.
A friend of mine returned to work on shortened hours after a major op, and wasn't seen for over a week despite being told each day that they would be seen as a specific time on that day. When they did finally get the meeting there wasn't even an apology for messing them around.0
