Gingerbread house

Hi all
I did a search and couldnt find this posted so I apologise if it has already been mentioned.:o
I was in Ikea today and picked up a couple of decorate yourself gingerbread house kits. They look really nice and consist of a 4 walled house, roof, chimney. They cost £1.99. It says the section stick together with melted sugar. i thought the kids could decorate and give as presents.
Anyway , not long after, I was in John Lewis and saw very similar sets (only diference I could see was that the John Lewis sets had smarties and icing sugar included) for £15!!!!
Hope this is useful for someone.:money:

Well it may not be very money saving, but i got a couple because i thought at that price we could make all our mistakes with the first one ,then eat the evidence and go on to make the others really well!!

  • I have bought these for the last 2 Christmases and my 2 DDs have loved decorating them. However did not get on with assembling using the suggested method - found it best to use a thick icing sugar mixture to stick together and left to dry before decorating (otherwise the house tends to lean or collapse completely!).

Note to self...Must get back down to Ikea to buy some for this year

I got these last year for my niece and nephew and had hoped they would have them again as they loved doing them.

Only bad thing is the melted sugar makes a bit of a mess when you put them together!

Another tip in relation to these is that a number of the supermarkets do little squeezy pots of icing, 4 different colours in a pack. One pack is enough to do one house (if you put it on as liberally as my niece does:rotfl:) and then we just got some smarties and jelly tots and stuck them on.

You need to use really thick royal icing to stick it together.

Pref have a piping bag handy for filling in the gaps. If you don't have one you can make one out of greaseproof paper.

Not tried the ikea ones but they sound great and probably cheaper than buying at the ingredients to make your own.

Here are some picks of the one we made for the school fair last year.

wow they look amazing! i really want to make one after seeing the one in boots, but again refuse to pay that price. costco had some ready baked gingerbread etc and the rest of the kit for £10, but again too much, will have to trundle off to ikea or bake my own! thanks so much!

It took us three adults hours to put together the IKEA house last year :rotfl:
It looked lovely, but I've never seen anything funnier when it started going scewed after a few hours, as the gingerbread softened. The second box we just ate out of the packet... This year I'll stick to making my own biscuits in the shape of trees and stars I think...
It did give my mum an opportunity to make candies with the melted sugar though, and I had fun making giant structures using cold ladles. Aahh, christmas time...
