borderline I would say. Some accounts don't allow BTs until you have received and activated the card. With the Christmas post always being slow, plus the bank hols, it would be safer to apply before you go away

    Thanks Mallygirl
Was thinking the same about the Christmas post etc, but I'm away for 4 weeks as of next Monday, so was worried about applying, getting approved and the card and PIN being delivered while I'm away, sitting on my doormat for 3 weeks and the issuer thinking somethings up because it hasnt been activated once delivered?

Will you be able to access the internet where you're going?

Yes, i guess i could apply while im away, say 2 weeks into the trip, but wasnt sure if it may pick up that a person registered as living in Hertfordshire has applied for a Barclaycard from deepest Cambodia or Vietnam?

Honestly, I think you've got plenty of time when you get back. Please don't spend your holiday in Vietnam messing around with your credit card. Like you say, it's a fraud marker waiting to happen...

I've certainly never had a delay of over 3 weeks in getting a credit card set-up.

If you will be taking a laptop with you (as opposed to using a public terminal) and you have a PC at home which will remain on then you could do what I do.

I spend a lot of my life away from home for work, and for anything 'sensitive' such as financial transactions, rather that log in direct from overseas I run TeamViewer on both my PC and laptop, then use my laptop to access my PC at home and do it on that. The only caveat is that if you're outside of larger cities like PP or HCMC then you might not have enough bandwidth to be able to stream your home desktop to your laptop.
  • Applying from abroad (do they check IP addresses?) could flag up, and either you will have to jump through hoops to provide ID or they might refer or decline you.

I think that would be best.

Halifax's 29 month 0% BT 0% fee card is an absolute champ. If you already have a Halifax login it shows up very soon and balance transfers are initiated before you even receive or activate the card.

  • If it's too late and you end up paying a months worth of interest will it be the end of the world?
Nothing to see here, move along.
