Get him a branded one such as Nextbase from Halfords/Maplins/Amazon. At least it will be a UK purchase and have firmware updates. If you want to spend £££ then Blackvue are pretty decent.
Check out Techmoan.com for reviews: http://www.techmoan.com/what-is-the-best-dashcam/
Non branded ones have come a long way in terms of reliability and software but are still a little flakey. If you buy from HK/China then you'll have to return it there.
Budget £10-£15 for a memory card. Do not buy memory cards from eBay, only buy from Amazon where Amazon sell direct - Not even fulfilled by Amazon. There should be Black Friday Deals and all the copycat ones soon so keep an eye out.The man without a signature.0 -
Check out Tesco petrol stations.
If you're lucky, you might be able to pick up a Co-Pilot Dual Mirror Dash Cam.I paid £36 for mine, but I've heard they're currently reduced to clear, at about £18.
The only thing I noticed was that the rear camera gave a mirror image, but you can flip it in a video player/editor.
Personally, I just bought a second camera for the rear screen. It gives me better quality on the rear camera (the twin camera one was only 720p on the rear camera) and extended recording time.
ETA: I agree with your father, about needing one, having been rear-ended by someone, who then claimed I had swerved in front of him. :mad:0
