Thanks, it was radio 4, so I believe that is always on the hour. I’ll have to go back and have a look if there are any cameras.

Which road was it? I'm in Birmingham and understand that it is only in the city centre the cameras were active for some bus lanes, some bus lanes have bee decomissioned eg near the Alexandra theatre and along the A47, A34 I don't believe there are cameras there.
I listen to the beebs and trust me they attempt to start on top of the hour but depending on the programming, I would imagine there is some leeway on the timing but not much, all you can do perhaps is wait and watch the post.

I drove along a bus lane today, that was applicable until 7pm (Birmingham). The time on my car was 7.01. But I had the radio on and the 7pm news came on as I was half way along 😩. I wondered if I will be hit with a fine or if there is any leeway like there is with speed tickets? Thanks for any advice.

    It's not 7pm yet?

I always keep my car clock set 2 minutes ahead of the correct time as a way to avoid being late for meetings etc. This would also reduce the risk of being 'caught' by being a minute or two too early in the bus lane.

No... set 2 mins ahead is what the OP suspects has happened to them. 7.01pm on clock, 6.59pm in reality. Of course this would work in the morning, where you would avoid being in the bus lane, but not in the evening. You can’t have it both ways!

Thanks, it was the slip road coming off the Aston Expressway going past the old fire station. I've driven past again and there is a camera, but it's towards the end (the news had already come on at that point) and it appears to be facing towards the sky so I'm slightly more hopeful. No ticket as yet.

The irony is I never use bus lanes (even when you're allowed to) but I had an emergency and looked at my clock and thought I was ok. In future I will just avoid them full stop, can't be done with the anxiety.

Thanks for all your advice guys, and yes if I get a ticket I will appeal it.
  • If you get a ticket it should come in a weeks time. I do hate that roundabout as a friend got run over on a bike by a bus and died.

Please don't stop using bus lanes! your one of the elite 10% in Birmingham that actually understand that bus lanes have operation times - well done you!

Those of us in this exclusive club have to put up with dirty looks from other drivers with no understanding of this as we wizz by, they hold up other lanes whilst they try to cut into the inside lane queue at the Bus lane end when they could have got over long before.

you have a supreme knowledge and advantage in life, a comprehension of a piece of street furniture entirely invisible (or not in the understood language) of the larger population.

There is an implicit risk in using a bus lane outside of the hours of operation. Be behind a bus and it stops to pick or set down passengers , and see if people will allow you out to overtake it.

Buses stop - it's their job. It shouldn't take you by surprise. Think ahead and don't get behind one in a bus lane.

You know what? I'm aware if that. But thank you for your kind advice.
