removal old basin waste

Hello All,
I was wondering whether anybody had some advice please.
I am refreshing my bathroom and have successfully changed the basin tap. The waste is more problematic.
I cannot remove the current one:
- it's the old type with a rod
- about 10 years old
- it does not have a large nut at the back, simply some form of black washer and sealant, both disintegrating basically
- the whole waste can be rotated fairly easily within its basin cavity
- My guess is that the top part screws into the bottom part. I slid a large 21/23 spanner into the overflow holes at the top, and tried gripping the bottom with an adjustable, however it doesn't unscrew. Tried WD40.
- I tried cutting at the base with a junior hacksaw to bypass the thread; however the blade did not last long enough really.
I am at a loss on what to do next, except calling a plumber... the bottom thread is a little damaged now and leaks slightly, and the top of the waste a little scratched.
I cannot see a button to post a photograph otherwise I would have provided that.
Thanks,
Thomas

Sometimes, if you tighten it slightly to break the seal before attempting to undo it again, that works.
To post a photo, you have to use a hosting site like tinypic and then post the URL here. If you put spaces in somewhere in the URL, it will allow you to post and then someone will fix your broken link for you.0 -
It probably is a nut, just a black plastic one with a rubber seal that's gone rotten and sticky.
Big pump pliers, Stillsons or similar or some sort of strap wrench. . .0 -
If it's a pop-up type with a rod to lift the plug then it'll be a two part, the 'bottom' half stays stationary and you unscrew the top half from above as you were trying. It sounds like they have also sealed the thread with silicone, but keep persisting from above (in an anticlockwise rotation!!) and it will come apart.
