Nationwide has another log-in method, using your customer number and any one of 3 items of personally defined memorable information.Ditto with Redux
People are able to use personal security information to open online banking without the need of card reader.
I myself have been doing this to manage my Nationwide online without the need of the card reader.
You sometimes still need the card reader for payment to payees which are not on your list or if you transfer quite unusual amount.
Otherwise for viewing you should be able to access your online banking without the need of card reader.
Yes I can log in, but that's not enough. I do indeed sometimes need to make payments to new payees. Sometimes it asks me for the card reader for existing payees, perhaps it's seeing an unusual IP address when travelling, or as you say, the amount is unusual.0 -
One further thought. Nationwide did tell me that their telephone banking service is still available... which is a way to make payments without needing to go online. Not sure if you can set up new payees etc., but doing this from overseas is not without cost/hassle.
And that's the point really. I use Clarity/Zero all the time and pay a few pence interest. When I'm in the UK, I don't need cash much, but I'm just in the habit of using Clarity. Yes, it will cost me a few pence interest. But in return for that, I know I get to keep my debit card and online access. No chance of it being swallowed, swallowed, or dropped in a cafe. If I travelled less, I'd take a different view and probably use my debit card in the way most people do.
I did once get my debit card stolen. (A replacement for an expiring card was stolen from the post before it arrived.) I got by by paying bills on CC. I paid off CCs by doing balance transfers from other CCs. I kept the plates spinning for about three months until I was back in the UK and could receive the replacement.0
