Stll getting posts for old owners

We moved into our house 3 months ago and when we moved in the old owners advised us they had put a redirection on their post, brilliant we thought!
However we have had post (and lots of it) for them everyday since we've been in the house.

Recently a credit card was delivered for them and we discovered their car and drivers license will still registered at our address.
I am getting pretty sick of it now, they've had three months to sort this out why are credit cards being sent to my address? This means the card is registered at my address which means any trouble, its my door they come knocking!

What can I do about this? Surely this isn't legal

N.B - I had to remove them from the electrol roll myself because they didn't do it!!

What are you doing with the mail???
  • To start with we were giving it to the neighbours as they had their new address but I've started writing "NO LONGER AT THIS ADDRESS, RETURN TO SENDER!" and putting them back in the post.
This however doesn't solve that I have a credit card registered to my address when they don't live there =/

Ok..............I think when they realise they are no longer getting their post things may change.

Credit cards are registered against people not houses - so don't panic on that score. I'm sure when their current card expires or they haven't received a new one, they'll be on to the bank pretty sharpish to sort it out.

That said I do feel your pain, been here 10 years and I still get stuff for not only the last owners but also the ones before them. Some get sent back as addressee unknown - others just get binned. Depends how I feel and whether I'll be walking past the post box or not.

No point stressing about it. Its one of those little things that you can't control.
  • We had a similar problem when we moved into our house last year. The vendors told us they weren't going to bother to redirect their post and said they would pop by to collect it instead. They didn't come round to collect it so initially we delivered it to them in batches.

It's been more than a year. We have stopped delivering it and they haven't asked for it. Like you we now put it back in the post box marked "return to sender, not at this address since xx/xx". We're still getting important looking letters from HMRC and others. For a while we did have debt collection letters also for unpaid utilities, but managed to get that sorted with the utility company who have asked the debt collectors not to pursue the debt at our address. At first it stressed me out but I've decided it's not worth worrying about it in the grand scheme of things.

As tizerbelle says, the credit card will be attached to the person who took it out; the debt shouldn't affect your credit rating and you should be able to prove to any debt collectors with documents from your purchase that the previous owners don't live there anymore.

Simple "Return to sender, not at this address since (date)" on envelope and post in post box.
  • We've been at our address for nearly two years and still regularly receive post ,.. the house was rented out for 3 years before we moved in so we get post for about 5 or 6 different people,

We just put 'not at this address' and stick it back in the post box, which slowly seems to be working as we do seem to be getting less.

Not sure why you are getting so worked up

    * RM redirection only works for the name provided. Often a variation (eg J Smith instead of John Smith, or use of a maiden name, etc ) gets delivered as per the address on the envelope

    * even where the name is a 100% match, redirection is only about 85% successful

    * credit does not relate to properties - you'll suffer in no way from her credit card

    * the electoral register is updated annually - it is the responsibility of the occupant (you) to list the residents for that year

    * 'not legal'? Nothing illegal here apart from the obligation to use a current address on a driving licence. The only other potential illegality is to use a false address for fraudulant purposes. But it does not sound like she is doing this deliberately. I might be wrong though.

    * 'Return to Sender' is perfectly acceptable. But why not be a nice person and try to help?
    * eg why not write to the previous owner yourself (via the neighbour), explaining, and ask her to inform DVLA, etc of her new address? List the various agencies you have received mail from so she contacts them all - people often just forget/overlook things like DVLA, HMRC etc

You can get a redirection for 3, 6 or 12 months

The last time I moved house, I had a redirection for 6 months, which I thought would give me time to inform everyone who needed to know.

When my partner bought her previous property, she was getting mail for the previous occupant for ages. She was forwarding it on initially, but when it kept coming for months on end, she marked it 'no longer at this address'.

Apparently, the daughter of the woman who used to live there had her scooter registered at the address, although she didn't actually live there herself. Her road tax reminder was returned to DVLA and she got fined for not renewing her tax. A salutary lesson.

Sorry I know this is an older thread, but we received Poll Cards for the people that used to live in our house yesterday. When you say it's the responsibility of the occupant to list the residents, is this of case of going online and filling in some sort of form?
