Hi All

We've been looking at double glazing recently (whole house inc 3 doors), so got a few local quotes and thought we'd compare this with Everest (supposedly 'the best'?). All the other companies sent round a chap to quickly measure up in about 30mins, discuss what we wanted and went away to get us a price. They got back with a day or so with the price it would be - simple!

Everest had a different approach!

The chap arrived dressed very smart and started the patter! He measured up, sat down and fired the laptop up, putting the details in he said he could get us a quote straight away (lovely i thought!). Once all the data was in he then started with the prices!

Firstly the price 'if we purchased the items separately' - odd i thought since the brief was clearly to do the whole house, but hey ho.... the quote was £36k !! (we bought the house for £34k by the way so you can see why we gulped!)

We then got the 'combined quote' for double & triple glazed. This was still astronomical.

We then got the 'if you order now' quote, which was still astronomical.

We then got the 'scrappage' price (£3k off)

We then obviously looked shocked as he went into clich! overload and offered us a 'manager discression quote' of 20% off - this week only and only on the say so of his manager who was surprisingly in a meeting and not available (!!). It was quite funny as he couldn't print anything with managers prices on, we had to write it down only.... secret squirrel style! Still too much and we'd now decided no way was Everest for us due to the 1980's style 'bad sales' technique.

The chap looked despondent - we hadn't taken the bait at all. We made our excuses and 3 hours after arriving he went on his way.

but he was not beaten! The next day we got a call to let us know the trusty laptop had fed him wrong prices and the new ones were less..... still way over the top.

I got a call from head office asking me all the important questions, such as had he looked smart and did he show us the credit arrangements available! They then asked if they could get a better deal for us ... pretty undermining for the poor sales chap so we said no!

Low and behold our sales chap was not beaten yet.... one last call to offer us triple glazed for the price of double..... nice offer, pity the last quote he gave was still £9k above the one we went for with a local company.

One point that was kept being driven was the quality of Everest was way above any other. We visited the showrooms of several other companies and the quality was identical - not the same as Everest is bespoke, but on a par and without the premium. Warranties were also the same (lifetime).

So, having lost half a day of our lives living in a 1980's time warp we decided not to use Everest

No idea if this is typical, but thought you folk may find it amusing!

I had the same kinda thing from Anglian Windows...

Youngish chap came in with a tablet (wearing odd socks - could tell as his trousers were too short, asked what I wanted & I said 2 new UPVC doors. He measured up & asked my budget, I said I had no idea as I hadn't bought these before but as a single Dad it wouldn't be able to be astronomical.

He smashed some figures into the tablet & before he showed me he said 'Don't be too alarmed by the initial figures as I'll get some discount for you mate' anyway after designing the most basic door possible the cheapest was £3125 each. WOW I thought thats hugely expensive but he then told me that they aren't the cheapest & the reason for this was that they make the doors from scratch & so they dont buy anything in. Surely this would make them cheaper as they can control costs but hey ho).

Anyway, after taking off the scrappage allowance (which he couldn't tell me the exact figure) it came down to £2600 a door. I said that was way too much & I couldn't afford one, let alone two at that price!! He said 'Ok I understand that you're a single Dad so I'll do something that I'm going to get told off for by my manager' he then gave me a long spiel about how much of a favour he was doing & he got the cost down to an amazing £750 a door - but only if I ordered then. I told him that I would take the weekend to think about it & he said he wouldn't be able to honour the price unless I signed there & then.

Anyway he left very deflated & I spoke to a local company who gave me slightly nicer doors for £1175 all in.

We had to smile when the salesman kept beefing on about quality installers.... my wife's parents had Everest and they fitted the patio doors upside down!

Everest pester even when you don't go for a quote. I emailed them merely to ask a question and never booked a quote. Since then I'm getting an average of 2-3 emails a day with various 'buy now, never to be repeated' offers. I have clicked the unsubscribe bit now, so will see if that stops them.

I am trying to get a quote from Everest.
I will not give them my phone number and so they will not come to give me a quote.
They have my e-mail address, but they will not quote until they have a phone number.
Guess that says it all about that company. Dodgy.

About 10 years ago, Everest came around and gave me a quote for 10 windows, something like £12k

I laughed, he said how much was I prepared to pay, I said £3k, he then went through a load of acting, saying that they had fitters with no work to do so he could do it cheaper, and let me have them for £3200.

I wasn't impressed, and when I finally got him to leave, I phoned up Anglian. I said I didn't want any !!!!!!!!, explained what happened to Everest, and what price they ended up with, and Anglian instantly agreed to match it over the phone.

A friend who works in the building industry reckons I could have got them down to £200 a window or lower..

Sad thing is, I wonder how many people simply pay the prices they offer?

That's why I hate adverts like buy 1 get one free etc for Windows, as they simply make up a price and try to fleece us for as much as they possibly can.
The way things are going, soon we are all going to be victims of something or other.

    Who will we blame then?
