Why would the Estate Agent do this?

We sold our home last week in Cambs and were going to relocate to Gloucestershire. Now my husband found a house here in Cambs that fits the bill and he made an offer on it. The estate agents that represent the house he offered on called our estate agents and told them we offered on a house locally. Why would they do this? My estate agent rang to try and find out why I wasn't relocating and said the other EA told him everything. I just find it strange.

We are still relocating but will be staying in my husband's family's home there as they are travelling until next year and his job will be relocating us again in the future. I just hated being put on the spot.

They would be verifying the chain.

I suppose if you'd told them you were moving and the call came in from a local agent that you were hoping to buy locally, they would be a bit disappointed that they hadn't had the opportunity to flog you a house themselves.

It's of no consequence to you though!

Could be anything really - I guess the estate agents could have been chatting about something else (may well even be friends) and this cropped up.

I don't really know why the EA would ring to tell your EA specifically though, if they didn't really know each other.

It is the EA's job to check everyone is who they say they are, and that they have the money they say they do. Why would you want to keep your change of mind secret, when your EA is going to have to deal with everyone in the chain?
    Been away for a while.
  • Agree with the previous posts, it's standard proceedure for the EA to check the chain below......you would also expect your EA to do this with anyone who offered on your property. It's so everyone knows where they stand from day one and to make sure that the offer can proceed
My home is usually the House Buying, Renting and Selling Forum where I can be found trying to (sometimes unsucessfully) prove that not all Estate Agents are crooks. With 20 years experience of Sales/Lettings and having bought and sold many of my own properties I've usually got something to say ;)
    Ignore......check!
  • OK, it all makes perfect sense. The whole house buying process is a bit foreign to me as I am an American living here and have never gone through it all before.

Also the property industry in this country is highly nepotistic :)
