Hi:
I'm looking for an editing app that my son can use as part of a college application that isn't too complicated to use but has sufficient tools to make short documentary.
I've had a look at Avid free which seems overly complicated but quite a few reviews suggest Filmora.
Has anyone any suggestions ?
Thanks in advance.

Hi - It depends how advanced the documentary is going to be and what kind of editing tools you need.
One of the most popular is 'Adobe Premiere Pro' which is often provided at colleges/university as it has basic tools and very advanced tools. It is very expensive to buy, however, you can get a 30 day free trial and then cancel and un-install the software before payment. The same applies to 'Final Cut Pro'.
Also, 'Lightworks' is a good free programme. Or if you want something super basic to put clips on a timeline with minimal transitions then 'iMovie' for macs, or 'Windows Movie Maker' should already be installed on the relevant computers.
I have never tried Filmora - but I usually trust what reviews say so if it looks good and it's free - what is there to lose?!

If you are looking to keep it simple, then do have a look at ShotCut

Need more than that, then I would look at VSDC0 -
I've been using Shotcut a bit but I haven't found it totally intuitive. It is worth looking at a few of the video tutorials before jumping in.
If you want to really get involved in this you could always grab the free version of Resolve from
