PIP home assessment.

Options
I had my PIP home assessment on Monday. I was terrified, slept about an hour for the previous night. The lady who turned up seemed pleasant, but very professional and to the point. She wheat through the claim form in detail. Asked lots of questions, and there were some leading statements...oh you can do this can't you...if I could I agreed, if I couldn't I put her right.

One thing I found odd were questions such as can I watch television, can I use a telephone. Looking through the descriptors I can't see how this could be relevant.

I think it went well overall, she read, in detail and took copies of some additional evidence I had, and one she said she didn't need as she had seen it before (so they do read it).

Lasted about an hour, she didn't look around the house, I have a cautious good feeling about it, if she hasn't stitched me up.

Now the waiting game, called the DWP today, they haven't received the report yet, but say they will send a copy when they receive it. How long should I expect to wait?

Thanks

Some of the questions seem a bit odd but I think have a purpose in the bigger picture gathering - as part of assessing whether you're giving an honest picture of the way your disability affects you. For example I remember in my assesment being asked what I use the internet for, which was surprisingly hard to answer 'well erm everything ...' was about as coherent as it got!

My daughter had her home assessment on Monday too, by a man though. DWP said yesterday that they also don't have the report back yet.

Waiting times vary accross the country and there really isn't any times scales. It depends on the backlog in your area. That report will give you some idea on what the decision will be. They mostly go with that report, it's rare if they go against it. Good luck and hope you're not waiting too long.
  • Watching a television programme shows that you can sit for a prolonged amount of time and concentrate (at least to some extent). Using a phone shows that you can communicate with others, can press the correct buttons (follow a sequence), etc.

I know that the 'using a phone' explanation sounds odd, but my son can't manage it - he can speak on the phone (even though we can't always understand him). However, he cannot ring someone because he can't press buttons properly due to hypermobile joints (his fingers bend backwards), and he can't independently complete the task on a mobile (unlocking the phone - even without a password, selecting the correct icon for phone calls, finding the person's name, then clicking on the green button to ring them). It's too many steps for him. You have to talk him through it every time (but as I said, it's hard to understand him anyway, and he also finds it difficult to hear due to hearing loss).
