Hi,

I've just set up my new pc and gone on to broadband.

The pc came preloaded with 'eTrust' antivirus software.....I've never heard of it.

I intended to download avast and avg free antivirus software as I've used them before and think they're good. However, when I installed avast the pc would not work (desktop came up as normal, but when I clicked on anything the egg-timer icon appeared and nothing happened).

I panicked for a while, then went into safe mode and uninstalled avast....pc working again. Phew!

What I wanted to know is, has anyone ever heard of eTrust? And what is the best way for me to go now to ensure that the pc is properly protected.

Thanks,

Pink

yes, etrust was shipped as a freebie by Microsoft with a security CD 2 years ago...problem might be that you left etrust installed ??? the 2 virus softwares may be clashing causing that problem

I would try AVG first though....much better...I've never had any problems with installing it

If you want to install a different antivirus, it is ALWAYS best to uninstall any that you may have on your computer. The chance of more than one antivirus conflicting with each other is too great and could end up giving you more problems than you need.

Uninstall Etrust, then download and install Avast (I'm impressed with this freebie AV)

    Hi Browntoa,

Thanks for that. There were no problems installing avast.......it was just that after it was installed the pc wouldn't do anything.

On my old pc I had avg and avast running together with no problems...could it be that eTrust and avast can't run together?

I'm an Avast user as well, though eTrust is a very well known and respected (chargeable updates) supplier

You were lucky with AVG and Avast not giving problems. Every antivirus software manufacturer recommends that you don't have more than one AV running on a computer at the same time.

I think if you are used to Avast, you should stick to it. It gets good reviews against other AV products. There are a lot of AVG users in these forums. That doesn't mean it's any better or worse than Avast, just personal preference.

I also used to use AVG but switched to Avast as it automatically updates and, as Sheel says, seems to be marginally better at keeping nasties out.
Can I also recommend Prevx too? This keeps an eye on 'intrusions' for you, so malware, spyware etc cannot get loaded onto your machine. Unless you want it, of course...
