Photo mug sounds like a good free gift to me. The fact you can get them
Cheaper isn’t relevant to the freebie aspect to me.

I agree that it’s a good free gift, my point of the cost was if OP wanted to charge £8 for the “free gift” if they want to cancel the rest of the order. It’s suddenly not such good value. And it’s all well and good OP saying they will give the choice of paying for it or returning it but I can’t imagine most people would want one of their personal photos on a mug going back to a company who could do anything with it. So OP is holding them over a barrel, they’d have to pay the £8 to stop that from happening and by keeping an item in an order it stops OP from having to refund any original postage.

It just seems like a ridiculous way of running a free gift promotion. If OP is happy to give an item with a value of £8 as a free gift then there will be thousands of other options that are not personalised so would be easier to work with in the case of returns.

why not just do spend over the amount and you get a discount, simple, bet most people would prefer that then a gift they may or may not want, and makes it far easier for any returns.
