Does anyone know why a Homegroup icon should suddenly appear on my desktop screen.

    Aliens put it there ..

To remove it go To control Panel, Administrative tools, Services.
Right click and Stop both services called Home-group listener and Home-group Provider

    OR

Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab.
Untick Use Sharing Wizard (Recommended) and click Apply.
Then tick it back and click Apply

    Like i said it's a strange quirk .
I first noticed it in windows 8 but i havent seen it in 10 yet personally ..

I have noted that pressing F5 to refresh the desktop sometimes gets rid of it too.

I can only guess that it is there as network services are started and is supposed to disappear before you see it, but sometimes doesnt due to the desktop not refreshing properly.
(Sometimes when you delete a folder from the desktop it stays there until you refresh too)
  • It sometimes appears by itself on my Windows 8.1 Tablet, i've no idea how or why though?
