I once worked for a CEO who described his HR team as "neither human, nor resourceful". That always made me smile, but my apologies to any HR professionals reading this!!

Back on topic, I have had a day off today and am enjoying some hobbies. No stress, very relaxing, it's a lovely day. I won't have any problems enjoying retirement (16 weeks to go).

Of course the real problem is that if they actually saw "talent" they wouldn't have the faintest clue how to "manage" it. 7 hours on - hope the IFA has sorted your retirement for you. Life is way too short to be dealing with people who give titles to people & have no idea what they mean. But it is another well paid job for a pal. Good for the pal but rubbish for our productivity figures.

    HR is an odd term.

Referring to your staff as a human resource just puts them on a level with a piece of equipment, photocopier, company car, computer etc.

When personnel became HR and purchase became procurement I knew my life was getting more complicated.

I didn't take to it so just worked from home for my last few years, I was never sure if nobody noticed or they just turned a blind eye...

I am also at that stage. I work part time so 3 days a week but am retiring next month. Rarely do I go into the office more than 1 day a week although I am still checking emails, working from home. Given that I wanted to go in July but am doing my employer a favour by waiting until December I refuse to feel guilty at not sitting at my desk 9 until 5 as there is no work to do. I have better things to fill my time with now. No one seems to mind.

So, just an update on my plans.

I delayed my decision to leave until June and now it is less than a fortnight before the Grand Depart. Mrs Fer has decided she will leave May 2019 as her employers offer a 6 month wind down into retirement , unlike mine which operate on a - the beatings will continue until morale improves policy.

So financially things have not really changed apart from a slight increase in ISA/Pension capital, however I have re-evaluated our number down to £48K per annum. I do not really think my liver and digestive system could support a significant upgrade.

The really good news is that the Polo passed its MOT, so will avoid the need to spring for a replacement car this year plus I have the added entertainment of parking really close to the high end Range Rovers at Lidl.

Having discussed my retirement plans with my IFA, in a nutshell, he has recommended taking from the ISAs first and keeping the pension pot for later. I guess I do not need to worry about that in the immediate term as I shall be pimping off Mrs Fer till she signs off.

Since announcing my plan to leave work I have spent most of my working day planning imaginary holidays we will be going on and have been surprised at how cheaply one can bag a week / fortnight around Europe if you are prepared to take your chances with the great Satan that is Ryanair and AirBnB. I have also reinvested funds into one of my first real loves - homebrewing and joined Xercise4less gym at eight quid a month. I could not heat the water for that, an absolute bargain.

So with less than 10 working days to go, is there anything I need to sort out (work related) prior to skipping out the door for the last time? I have already got sufficient stationary to restock Staples. My biggest conundrum is what the walkout music should be.

Thanks to all for your previous comments, most helpful and have given me the confidence to go for it. The Great Escape is on, lets hope I am in the right tunnel. Cue music, roll titles.

I am extremely jealous ;) Age is the only thing stopping me but I fully agree with the work B/S. I had to sit through another new performance review system last week :o

Personally I gave my work 5 years notice thinking I was being "nice" and it quickly backfired into a full on demotion. So played hard, asked for redundancy instead only for them to run scared and give me 2 days a week from home and kept my title/position and team with actually less work and travelling, so not all bad.

However I am still 4 years too young and I really don't want to wish those years away, so like you I do plan all the nice things I will eventually be able to do.

Just enjoy your last few days with the biggest grin you can manage :D Well Done.

Ignore work, think about what you will be doing with the rest of your life. Unless you run the company, you will be forgotten pretty quickly if my experience was anything to go by! Keep planning those holidays and think up a stupid name for you home brewing enterprise. I had some Wriggly Monkey beer at the weekend, no idea where they got that name from but the beer was great.......
