I received a letter from HMRC in the week explaining that banks will be sending them data on the interest that they pay me. I dare say that many other posters have received a similar letter.
It’s a little odd because I recall a bank for whom I worked sending this information to HMRC back in the early 90s and another bank did the same since then. In fact, we had to send the details of overseas customers to HMRC too and they forwarded it on to the respective authorities.
There was a fairly little known rule that fixed deposits over (I think) £50k were paid gross and it was up to the individual to declare the interest. We reported it to HMRC but I’m not sure whether they acted upon it and chased the individuals.0 -
