thanks Chris, although unlike Virgin and the rest my connection has nothing to do with their exchange so I don't see how they would know about it....

The Virgin Broadband network uses their own infrastructure.

The arrangement that BT appears to have agreed (presumably with Ofcom) mean that you are ruled out if you have any broadband connection, even if it has nothing to do with their network.

I don't think we need to search for any logic, beyond protecting their bottom line.

So because I have cable broadband with Virgin Media, which is completely independent of using BT's network, I am unable to have a discount on my BT phone line?

I can understand broadband providers that rely on the BT network, but cable broadband does not!!

I may be writing to OFCOM...... !

So BT have produced the tariff guide for the new phone only customers.

But instead of a £11.99 per month tariff, its £18.99 with a £7 discount.

But that's the same price..... no, it isn't.

Come the inevitable BT line rental price increase of 5% for example, the 5% will apply to £18.99, not £11.99, effectively doubling the increase you would otherwise have paid..

Just a reminder that BT Home Phone Saver at £21.99 pm all-in might still be a better deal for some people because it includes most non-mobile calls and a useful package of extras:

    What you get:

    Your monthly line rental

Unlimited calls to UK landlines at any time, for up to an hour

Inclusive calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers at any time, for up to an hour

1000 free minutes to BT Mobiles (excluding BT Business Mobile)

    Free 1471 Call Return

Inclusive 1571 Call Return if you have the BT Answer 1571 voicemail service

BT Privacy with Caller Display, Call Minder with Enhanced BT Call Protect, International Premium Rate Call Barring and up to seven useful calling features for free when you opt-in

Anonymous Call Reject will be provided if BT Call Protect isn't available in your exchange

Another good thing going for BT Home Phone Saver is the price is fixed for another two years, unlike the line rental on it's own or the cost of the various separate call packages which will rise at least annually.

At the monent, line rental and Unlimited Anytime is 50p per month cheaper than BT Home Phone Saver, but just one price rise for line rental or unlimited anytime will wipe that out (on past form, likely to be by the Autumn of this year).

Additionally, BT Home Phone Saver comes with unlimited calling features at no additional charge. Using just one call feature already makes HPS the better deal.

Like anyone else that frequents a money-saving forum, I am concerned when I hear that more than three-quarters of a million BT customers who should be on this deal (or something like it) are not on it and are therefore paying BT far more money for their phone service than they should be.

Over-paying for line rental was only part of the story. Over-paying for calls is also a huge issue. At 22p per call plus 13p per minute it takes just two calls of five minute duration and two calls of thirty minute duration in a month for a deal with Unimited Anytime calls to be the cheaper option.

BT have done everything they can to avoid customers saving money, and look set to continue to do the minimum they can get away with. I see that Ofcom has said they will review BT's actions and if they are not satisfactory, they may make regulatory changes.

Doesn't 18185 save you even more? UK calls 1.5p per minute plus 5p connection charge.

Absolutely, as I said earlier, the £7 off is great but it's not the right way to do it, all goes wrong at the annual price rise..
