Won't go into mass details but, do you think a quote for brake pads alone with labour, just for the rear wheels, at £189.90 is reasonable?
Given Euro sell the most premium brand for my car at £42.

That is well over the top the maximum they should charge is 1 hours labor plus cost of pads so should be under £100 at any reasonable garage.

You won't get them done in an hour with a seized caliper....

Quite. Did they just change the pads, or did they change the pads, discs and one caliper? BIG difference in the work involved.

But, yes, it is eminently possible for the footbrake to be fine, the handbrake not, and it to be the caliper that's the problem, rather than the cable.

Garage who failed it complete joke, now wanting to charge me a total retest so going else where.
So you think it is a complete joke and the garage should have passed it and let you drive around with faulty brakes?

Does anyone have any thoughts on what next?

As I said, caliper has been replaced, brand new, new pads both sides and it's about to have a new handbrake cable.

It's just strange how I am told the brake test has shown a imbalance on the foot brake.
Would the handbrake cable affect this foot brake or what are people's thoughts?

To those, I never started this thread to slate a garage, or say what is right or wrong so unless those have in put with regards imbalanced foot brakes, please can you avoid replying as per forum rules.

Finally, it is possible to replace a caliper and brake pads in a hour, I watched the garage do this from the viewing window.

Yes, easy. I've done it myself several times. However, the brakes need to be bled correctly following a caliper replacement. Replacing a caliper, pads and bleeding the brakes in an hour is pretty good going.

I have given a possible explanation above but as you missed I will repeat it here.

So car failed on handbrake below required level due to seized cable. New pads fitted and handbrake cable tightened so the handbrake held the car. The seized side would not have moved so all the tension went to the good side creating drag on the pads when the handbrake was released causing brake imbalance. Correct repair is to replace the cable and pads if they have worn unevenly.

Calliper on the side with stuck cable may also have seized due to lack of use which is why they needed to replace the calliper.

A change of pads take a while to bed in to the disks. Pads are very robust and take a while before the whole pad is making contact with the entire surface of the disk. It is just making contact with the ridges at first . So if one disk is heavily scored it may take a couple of hundred miles to bed the pad in..:A
