As a child mum used to have a jar of a product called silver dip - I don't know if you can still get it. But it worked wonders on a silver necklace I lost and found behind a piece of furniture several years later all black and tarnished.

  • I store my silver jewellery with chalk as it absorbs a lot of the moisture that makes the silver tarnish.

jojo will it work with warm (not boiling water) if left longer I am scared of putting my jewellery in boling water!
You might need boiling water to dissolve the bicarb - at least I'm sure it will dissolve faster in boiling - but if it doesn't have stones, then I'm not sure there's anything that can go wrong! It definitely won't melt ...

  • I bought a pack of 100 small plastic bags, self sealing. I keep individual pairs of earrings, rings, bracelets etc in these within a zippered bag. I can see instantly which item I need, and the air is kept out which causes the silver to tarnish.
  • If you don't have bicarbonate to hand, warm water, salt and foil will also work, you just need the salt to make an electrolytic solution. I do my chunky silver necklace in a mini lock n lock tub and give it a good shake for about 20 seconds. Rinse and buff dry.
Thanks to JoJo for the explanation too :)

  • I have a tub of silver dip that’s about 10years old and still works but my bracelets that I wear all the time get toothpaste and a brush while i’m in the bath (not the same one I use for my teeth I hasten to add! opals are porous that’s why you should remove jewellery with them when washing up or bathing. The best cleaner ever was when I went into some mineral baths in Nevada, my silver came out like new, wonder what it did to my skin?

Gold doesn't tarnish, so just warm water with a drop of washing up liquid should do the trick. Use a toothbrush to get into the fiddly bits between the links that can pick up dirt.
  • Any ideas for best way to clear tarnish from non silver costume jewellery. Not overly expensive items but have a few that are too nice to throw out but chains etc have gone black/tarnished. Will silver cleaners work on these? have gold/silver coloured ones.
