Odd-Looking Vent in Garden

Apologies if this is the wrong forum.
I am looking to purchase a house. On the driveway next to a manhole cover is an odd looking structure. It is brick-built, and has a concrete slab on top that cannot be moved, and an airbrick either side. It measures approx 2ft square all round.
The estate agent hadn't got a clue what it was. Does anyone have any ideas, please?

it could be a stink pot / vent associated with the manhole. If it bothers you that much then lift the manhole and have a look for a hole leading from the manhole in the direction of the erection. In the old days the final manhole before the public sewer was provided with an air vent and these were not always mounted on pipes that went up 20ft into the air.
this thread has a pic of the typical arrangement I mean:

I have one of them in my garden as per the post from Nige F. My manhole is the final one before the public sewer and has a u bend at the bottom of the manhole meaning there is no airflow down the sewer unless this vent is present. The actions taken by Nige are precisely what has happened with mine, the u bend has been circumvented by someone "losing" the rodding eye bung and this opening up the entire system to air flow, thus rendering the vent irreverent and resulting in the vent having been removed and the hole in the side wall of the manhole being capped off.0 -

And when you asked the vendor/estate agent, what did they tell you?
I'm certain it's an entrance to buried treasure...0 -

Surprised this hasn't been removed by the mods......:rotfl:0 -
it is nonetheless an accurate description of such vents
Well yes.....but I understand that the noun for a certain bird that crows in the morning has been removed from some sites......:)
Pardon my levity....mea maxima culpa.....0 -
I love the idea of an irreverent vent.0
