I use Sygic, and have no complaints - on an Android phone, but there is an iPhone version.

Google Maps only uses data when you search for a destination or if it detects changes en route. But once you've got the route started, you can switch data off and it'll work for the whole journey. It won't give you updates or changes etc but still works 100%.

You can also download maps for use offline / without data.

Also even if you are using google maps to its full extent... its data use is fairly light.
  • My concern with Google Maps is if you're going from A-B & it's a planned journey and you set it up at home so that everything is offline & then you set off & everything goes well ... then fine.

But what if you're out & about & something happens? You have to detour off your A-B route for [insert reason here]?
So now you're on a new route that you didn't download the map for? Bringing us back to the problem of having to use data.

Also how light is fairly light (& like has been said, not everywhere gets good data coverage)? If i go on a 170 mile journey and then when i'm there i'm driving round & about for a weekend & then i'm taking that 170 mile back but oops it's the weekend & the road has been closed off so it's detour time (this happened to me a couple times actually, obviously i got there in the end but after a bit of driving around in circles).

Well, I use Google Maps quite a lot and I've just looked and apparently since I've had my phone, which has been 4 months, it's used 81MB. I'd call that quite light. :)

Compared to 1.4GB for Spotify, 3.2GB for facebook, 1.1GB for snapchat, 11.4GB for Youtube, and 350MB for email over the same period. 0.08GB is very good! and like I said I use it a lot, use it for most long journeys as well as navigating on foot. I never turn data off btw.

Have you actually tried the new Tomtom? I was using it on an Android device and didn't have any issues with it, if it's still the same as before you can easily try it for free as you get a limited number of miles per month without paying.

I have taken to using Google maps after my satnav stopped finding a gps signal. As already said you can download maps of an area so a minor detour won't matter. If it is a more major one then you won't use much data. If you want up to date traffic info. then there isn't much option but to use data. I find I use 80-100mb more per month than I did before using it which causes no problem for me.

Yes, because i wouldn't be here calling it terrible if i hadn't tried it because that would be just daft :)

I'm just glad that i only ever update apps via iTunes now rather than OTA (due to getting caught out with a bad 'upgrade' many moons ago) because at least if the update doesn't work i can pluck the old app out of the bin & put it back on.

Herewego. which was Here maps which was the excellent OVI maps on the Nokia.

The data usage on navigation is tiny, i wouldnt hesitate on using one, i sometimes use WAZE where you can see other users and you can mark hotspots, heavy traffic or speed cams etc.
