Very old PPI - over 20 years

Hello, this is my first posting on the forum. I took out a loan to buy a car over 20 years ago, and PPI was part of the loan. I cannot remember if it was with Midland Bank, or Natwest Bank or another. I have contacted Experian for my credit report, but it doesn't show that far back, and they cannot help. Any advice greatly appreciated - thank you.

  • Personally, I'd give up.

If you have no memory even of which Bank the loan was with, how can you be so sure you had PPI?

You could send Subject Access Request (SAR) letters to the Banks you think provided the loan but, two decades on, the likelihood of them having records is slim and you'll pay £10 per lender which is not refundable.
  • Thanks, but definitely had PPI - that I do remember as had never heard of it until bought first car.

Do note that not all PPI was mis-sold. Proving you had the insurance is just the first step. If you want it refunded, you also have to show it was mis-sold to you.

You have some overwhelming obstacles to overcome before you can even make a complaint.

    That is not true.
I thought I would never get anything until I used the resolver software on this site.
I had three loans for car buying between 1995 and 2000, I knew they were at Barclays though.
I entered the very little information I had into resolver, 13 days later Barclays deposited £3045 into my account for PPI and interest earned. There was no fuss or agro in any way at all.
I say just go for it, you have nothing to lose. If you cannot remember which bank it was, put your claim to all three and see what happens.

Ridiculous. Much better idea would be to simply phone them and ask.
  • Thank you Phil!

Unfortunately, Phil's response is the least helpful in the thread. You are free to take his advice, but expect nothing as a result and you won't be disappointed.

Please do not write "complaints" to random Banks who you are not even sure you had PPI with, that's unfair to people with valid concerns.

Your research prior to complaint should involve SAR letters and/or phone calls, not speculative "complaints".

Phone calls don't always work, I put in a complaint for old PPI to one of the banks and they told me they had no record of the credit cards I was complaining about. They were back in the early 90's. Luckily I had retained all my old statements and they suddenly changed their minds !! I believe they have archived records that they are not letting people know about via the phone call route. So maybe the SAR is a better option, even if it costs a few quid, if you are successfull in tracking it down and complaining successfully it would be well worth it.
  • I agree with Phil. I also knew I had had a loan in 1995 with a bank. I did not have any paperwork nor account numbers, but wrote in with a claim for ppi and got a reply stating that I’d actually had three loans and offering me £4,400!

Yes, I could have rung up and asked whether or not I had ppi on accounts I have no paperwork for, but, for the cost of a stamp, felt that the letter option was likely to suggest a more assertive approach without the need to disclose the lack of knowledge.

With the £billions paid out in PPI refunds, do you really think Banks deliberately withold records due to "lack of knowledge"?

Records have either been kept or they haven't. There is no in between.
