Unauthorised Credit Check

I opened an account with Coral bookmakers earlier in the year, back in Jan.

I know when you open an account bookies perform a ID check.

However i noticed on my credit file they have recently performed a search of my credit file and it says "account management". I didn't authorise this, what can they see? Should they have asked me first?

I find it quite bizarre.

Check again what you agreed to at the time of signing up.
  • i will try. Just to add this is not a credit account, standard account where you deposit a tenner on your card and use it to bet etc.
  • cant see anything other than the verification when opening an account.

An ID check is done using your credit file. As it wasn't done as part of a credit application it won't affect how lenders view your credit worthiness.

In a nutshell, they can do a soft check or a hard check. A soft check shows up to you on your credit report but won't show up to any lenders you apply to (so it doesn't affect your rating or history).

Its possible they're doing this because addicts have a tendency to gamble more than they can afford to and/or take our loans (sometimes expensive payday ones) to place their next bet because they want to win so they convince themselves it will all be okay, they'll win & be able to pay everything they borrowed. Some of those people refuse to face facts and will then claim it wasn't their fault, the bookie shouldn't have taken the bet.

If there is any financial limit placed on your account (on the amount you can bet perhaps) then its doubly likely that this is the reason for them checking imo.

  • Thanks for the response but 99% of it it doesn't relate to me.

I last placed a bet with them in early September for 20 quid, couple of bets per month, certainly not a big hitter and no limits on the account. I also find it very strange they do a credit search a month later after my last bet.

I've emailed to find out what's going on.

£20 a couple of times a month might be a gambling issue for people especially if you are using several sites and how will they know without checking.
