linux vs vista

I keep hearing about this linux...is it any good? I know NOTHING about it, can you still use ie with it? Is it good enough to replace xp/vista? How do you go about installing it?

It depends what you use your PC for. There are Linux substituons for virtually every Windows program there is, the one exception is games, as few are supportes under Linux. If you want the internet, word, photoshopping, mail etc, then Linux is fine.

Have a look here and grab a distrobution that uses a live CD, and you will be able to run it on your PC without having to install it.

can you install it instead of vista, if you wanted? are there many differences? (such as, does right and left clicking still perform the same options or is it all funny like a mac)...is there anywhere i could watch a tutorial video showing the differences or walkthrough kind of thing?

    What Zagu said.

Most people seem to recommend Ubuntu for beginners. It can be run from a live CD so doesn't affect your windows installation. It also includes most of the software you need.

It is different to windows, but it is easy enough to get used to. There can be issues with hardware compatibility but I believe most of those have been sorted now.

EDIT: Just seen your more recent posts, yes you can install instead of Vista or as well as Vista. Using a Live CD justs lets you test it without messing things up. Running from a live CD is slower than having it installed however.

Have a look on YouTube for videos, there are always lots on there.

Thanks all, i might give it a try. can you still use Microsoft things with it, like ie and msn?
And where do I get a live cd? is it free?
What about the apps you get with ms, like disk defragmenter, does linux have one of these...?

  • Linux does not need defragmenter becuase it has a file system that WORKS!!!. Ubuntu is shipped with all the tools needed for a novice to an expert. You will find it easy and simple to use.

Can i still use msn messenger and all normal programs that you can download/install with it? Also word, office etc or do these only work with microsoft. I have read linux has it's own version of word but i am just wondering, especially with normal progs and msn.

Why would you want to replace Vista with Linux. Linux can be a pain to run stable sometimes aswell.
Don't listen to the bad things about Vista its the best

Just because it's free don't mean it's good

    Ditch Norton Now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wall:

    Hi
Pretty much all the programs that you use in Windows have Linux equivalents. And they're mostly free and easy to install with a distro such as Ubuntu.
I definitely recommend that you try using the LiveCD for a while. Then if you're reasonably happy with it you can install it. Most people go for a dual-boot setup, because Linux is hard work to get your head round (imho). So it's best to have Windows to fall back on.
