can you recommend a digital camera?

Options
I've got a special holiday planned in a few months and would like to buy a new camera for it. I have never used a digital one, so am looking for one that's quite basic but still high quality. Can anyone suggest one that they have or know of please?

I'v had a Sony Cyber-Shot P93 for about a year now. I'm also a beginner with cameras and found this camera has excellent auto settings so you can just point and click, and a lot of advance manual settings that I haven't fully learnt yet. It will also do small movies. I think the picture quality of this camera is fantastic, both for the computer and prints. It comes with rechargeble batterys and charger, and I've found it seems to last ages off a charge.

You can read a full review of this camera HERE .

Cor Blimey Mis LisaLou, talk about opening the floodgates!

1st off I think we need to narrow the field somewhat (there are literaly hundred of digicams all of which will do a great job in one way or another).

Key question, how much do you want to spend. Think of a total sum and bear in mind that you'll need to save some money from that to buy additional memory cards and possibly batteries.

Next, are there any types of pictures you REALLY want to be able to take. 2 really good examples of how this helps are things like nature \ bird pics which need a 10x zoom or party pics which need good a good flash. It's not problem if you don't know and want a general purpose cam, but something like this will help in the selection process...

Lets start off there and see what we get.

Good sites to check up on camera's you may see around?

    www.steves-digicams.com - A very good review site.

www.dpreview.com - some good reviews, but very good forums.

Hi Miss. I bought the Nikon Coolpix 4100 from 7dayshop:

Together with a 256MB memory card, 4 rechargeable batteries and charger it came to £143 inc. p&p.
I'm very pleased with it and also bought it for holiday pics. It has a lot of options in the settings and menus, most of which are pretty easily learnt for the main occasions when you would want to snap away under different conditions. But I also like the fact that it has a point and shoot setting which you can choose for all occasions and let the camera worry about the settings. Because the camera has to "guess" what you're photographing, this might not give perfect results every time, but for the majority of scenery and people photos it's fine.
