Hopefully somebody can advise a better solution than I currently have!
Typically used for looking at photos stored on PC (win 10) on Tablet (android) I have been using ES File Explorer.
It has some useful functions for file management (little used really) but is quite good to set up across LAN access to shared folder locations. Thus I and others in the house can view in comfort in the lounge photos stored on the PC (in the study).
Unfortunately it seems a little slow loading presently that I can live with but biggest gripe is all the extra twiddly unwanted bits that have been added lately such as 'battery monitor, 'storage reporting' advertising for games etc.. So much so I will be deleting the app.
Can anybody offer suggestions for alternatives that are not full of that bloatware? Two way sharing would be good but viewing PC folder files on tablet is the priority. Stored photos are many so do not really wish to use cloud based solutions as they would all need to be uploaded.

Just buy a NAS drive and attach it to your home router. That way you can access your stuff from any device without the computer as well.
You can just use OneDrive, Dropbox or whatever to sync with the NAS as well.0 -
ES File Manager works well with photos because one of the 'extras' it includes is its own viewer. Like you, I got tired of ES FM taking over my tablet and tried a whole lot of other file managers. Many do not connect to a network share, so they're out immediately. Of those that do, most will show the first pic selected, but not allow you to swipe to the next photo. Also excluded.
The simplest, cleanest file manager I found was File Manager+. Not the most powerful but ideal for viewing photos on internal memory, SD card or network share.
A good alternative is to use a photo viewer that can connect to a network share (most can't). QuickPic does. You need to go into its menu, click Add and set up a samba link. After that it's plain sailing.0 -
Can you not just put an http server on the pc, and use the standard browser on the tablet ?0

OK thanks all, several ideas/solution potentially there so I will make my way through them. I did find ES file manager quite intuitive and yes it was easy to see pix as fenlander says.
I like the teabag idea and can get a local host set up on my PC. Not sure how to progress after that!! Although Firefox will display pix not sure how to do that across the network from Tablet...yet!
Could be quickpic might be a good way to start!! as I am not really interested in file sync or ftp etc at present...Wow ftp and telnet, filezilla etc takes me back......
Will report back0 -
Right. Ask one simple!e question and it turns into a pyramid!
Thought Quickpic was just what I needed so now have it on tablet.
...next question how do I get it to view the network share, fenlander? Tried the help (from settings window takes me to p://www.alensw.com/en/tips ) but the website seems to be down0 -

First: make sure you have a named share set up on the machine with the images.- In QuickPic click the triple bar icon at top left to open the menu.
- Click + Add to add a source.
- Click Samba.
- In the top line enter smb://computername/sharename, e.g. smb://mylaptop/photos (assuming that your pc is called 'mylaptop' and your share is called 'photos'. You can also include a subfolder: smb://computername/sharename/foldername).
- Enter your login and password for the share on the next 2 lines - probably the same as your login credentials for the host device.
That's it. The link is retained when you close QuickPic.0
