It sounds like this employer has a pretty ridiculous system for promoting people.

Quite why they would ask silly questions and look for silly answers, rather than analyzing job performance, is beyond me.

I think it is time for him to start searching for another job!

Sometimes you do have to move employer to advance your career. It isn't uncommon.
  • Hope all goes well but maybe take a step back and don't get so consumed in your sons work life. It must be worrying you and perhaps you get worried by other aspects of his life too? Be there for support but I'm not sure getting so immersed is good for you.

I was going to give up on this for obvious reasons but the last few posts (#29. #31 & #32) have made me reconsider.

I am not consumed in my son’s work, I’m merely doing what any other parent would do when their child asks them for help. I am not worried about him as far as his work goes, he is damned good at what he does and is respected and liked by his colleagues. I do worry about one or two personal issues/problems he has, but, he has finally got some help for those and is making progress in those areas; hopefully they will soon be behind him. However, because I know a lot more of the background story of his time working at this lab, I understand his frustration and annoyance at not being promoted, and I really feel for him and I only wish there was something more I could do.

Hence, my reason for starting this thread was to try and help my son and try and get him some independent and unbiased advice. Before anyone asks, my son wouldn’t even think of coming to a forum like this to get his own advice mainly because he is dyslexic. He’d happily sit down and talk to people face-to-face but has a bit of a problem with words.

Some of you may see things slightly differently if I was to provide more of the background, but I’ll check with my son first to see if he is happy with me doing that.
