Upvc drain holes in door not draining

Options
Morning all,

Any help from the experienced would be greatly appreciated.

I installed a new UPVC back door (full glass pane) recently which has two slotted drain holes just below the drip bar. I think I should make it clear at this point that the drain holes are in the door, not the frame.

The problem is that when I open the door into the property the water held in the door comes whooshing out onto the carpet. It appears that the drain holes are not discharging all the water in the door until the centrifugal force from opening the door forces it out.

I hope this explains it clearly and you can help

Regards,

Ashley

Hi Ashley, that's a clear explanation of the problem. I assume the water is supposed to drain into the threshold part of the door frame and be lost through drain holes in the threshold.

I suggest you check where the drain holes in the door are in relation to the sealing strip on the front of the threshold. If the drain holes are being blocked by the sealing strip, you may be able to adjust the door on its hinges, so that it sits just a little lower so that some of the hole is not blocked. If this is the problem, and there is no adjustment possible, cutting away a small section (no more than 5mm) of the seal would allow the water to drain away.

Only other option I can think of is to remove the door from the frame and drill some drain holes (3 should do it) in the bottom of the door, so that the water can again drain into the threshold.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • Hi,

    Thanks for the prompt reply.

The drain holes are 5mm proud of the threshold seal. I think the drain holes may actually be too high, creating a lip that contains a certain amount of water. Strange design.

I think my only option is to drill holes underneath as you mention. I assume this is acceptable and won’t cause problems. The key thing is the threshold draining water away.

On a secondary note. On hot days the top of the door struggles to shut near the top cam. I have toe and heeled the door to its maximum (the door is plum and level) and pulled the top hinge to its maximum adjustment. This seems to be a manufacturing problem as the top of the frame is plastic welded i.e. no adjustment of the frame or door will create more clearance. The only solution I can see here is to shave a tiny bit off the door or grind down the cam seat, seems a bit of a bodge. Potentially changing the hinges from a butt to a flag would allow more adjustment.

    Regards,
