This has just happened to me with Halifax and very frustrated as it took an age applying for it on line and having received an email stating that it had been approved, only days later I received another email stating that the balance transfer fail?
No other explanation.. I can only imagine it's to make sure the application is genuine

Probably an IT problem. Happened to me 3 years ago too, no problem trying again when the card had arrived.
  • I've just had this problem also. Accepted for card and requested transfer from a Post Office card to Halifax and got the fail email.

Those who had transfers go through after receiving the card, did you request it again online or did it naturally happen after activating the card?

Thanks for sharing the result Pennypincher. I’ve just received the exact same email and am also trying to conclude a balance transfer from my Tesco credit card.
  • This is a brilliant thread. It really put my mind at rest and good to know I'm not the only one. I've just received an email from Halifax with a "fail" notification. Has anyone sorted out their balance transfer when the physical card arrived? Please let me know.

    Thanks Muchly

Sometimes what happens is that although you have been accepted online, the balance transfers you enter start to process although you account may not be fully open.

These in turn try to complete and therefore fail.

Once the card has been printed the account is fully open so when they are requested again, they go through without a hitch.
  • The same thing has just happened to me. I'm trying to transfer from MBNA to this new Halifax one (which I applied for because the info on here said that it would be fine). Hopefully it will be as you have said above, and that I just need to wait for the card to arrive.

similar happened to myself (yet to receive and activate the card) however the balance i'm transferring is from Lloyds, will that be an issue?
  • Same thing happened to me today too. I was transferring balance from Lloyds to Halifax
  • I have never had this problem as I prefer to do B/T once the new card has arrived and I've set everything up like DD, contact detail and an online login.

Could just be me but if I want to B/T a large amount I don't want it getting knocked back at application stage, I prefer to see what limit I get and then work with that.

Wife just applied for Virgin card was given £8800 limit which was perfect as I only wanted to move 5K, I think that's the best way IMO, apply, get it, find out limit, set it all up online THEN do B/T, majority of card providers give you 90 days to make the transfer so what's the rush?

I got given the limit when I made my application.

Thinking back at it I may know what caused it to fail.
Max I could transfer was 95% of my limit
I transferred the max I could from the two cards to Halifax.
I presume when the first card balance transfer went through and the fee got charged.
the original amount I set up for the 2nd balance transfer would have taken me over the limit of 95% which caused it to fail.
