wood everywhere except stairs and landings which are carpeted
  • I have installed wood (engineered, 19mm ply substrate + 6mm oak layer on top) in my bedroom, which is on a concrete floor as it's a bungalow. Installed it myself and it's been down about five years now and I'm completely happy with it.

The whole house will eventually have wood or stone floors, the carpet in the other rooms will be going.

We have stripped and varnished original floorboards in our bedroom and carpets on the landing. Doesn't feel at all odd.

Frankly, what your toes hit as you get out of bed is one thing, but what your feet slip on rushing upstairs is often carpet.

All of us five have found carpet & socks or even bare feet have led to quiet on the stairs, apart from intermittent thuds & yells of ow...

It is possible that with advanced age we will slow down & not slip but right now, the carpet may be relaid with the nap the other way... Hell to clean though.

I wouldn't want a wooden floor in the bedroom, I'd like it to be warm and cosy on my barefeet!
  • We have exactly that. If I had my time over, I would go for carpet throughout, but not because I don't like the look/feel of the wood, or because going from wood to carpet is odd - it's no more odd than going from carpet to tiles in a bathroom.

My problem is that the wood has shrunk to a ridiculous extent, and it now looks a mess (not helped by the fact that it's dark wood so the gaps show up even worse). It's been down for years now, and I'm seriously thinking about replacing it with the same carpet we have on the landing - just hope they still make it.

  • I've just DIY-installed laminate flooring in a bedroom and I'm pleased with the result. The carpet always looked a bit grubby, but laminate is easy to keep clean. I might buy a rug to put next to the bed in colder weather.
