Skip Company Failing to Remove Skip

It's all very well getting angry, but i've seen the videos online of what happens when people start getting nasty with skip hire companies, they roll up, tip the contents on the lawn, take their skip and leave you to it.

I recommend being reasonable and staying calm, or you could end up like these people on Youtube, often left looking like some self entitled brat who got what was coming to them.

I'm not one for the getting angry approach. I'm simply not very good at it and I'm not convinced that it's always the best course of action. Besides, in the event that I do need to take some form of action, I think it is in my best interests to remain the reasonable party.

The fitter has already been paid so that's not an option!
If removal of the waste was part of the contract with the fitter suggest you will be charging him with failure to complete the contract.

what exactly do you think you should be entitled to and for what reason?

You'd think that the skip hire company would want return of the skip asap to put on another job.

I read a similar thread as this a couple of weeks ago. But don't know how it was resolved, if it was.

In that case the skip company wouldn't pick it up because allegedly the builder hadn't paid them.

Inform the skip company with a deadline that if not picked up another skip hire can have it for nothing.
  • Have you spoken to the skip company directly? Are they reasonably reputable? We had this problem and we gave up asking the builder and went straight to the skip company. Turns out builder had not paid the skip company for the extra weeks it was used. I guess they eventually decided they needed the skip back as one day it just went. As did the builder lol.

Have you seen how many skips are generally laying around in a skip yard. They are currently getting free storage for the skip and the rubbish in it which, as soon as they take to the landfill, will leave them with a hefty bill.

Another skip co will not touch it unless under the instructions of a court order (unless they also drive a transit pick up and live in a caravan of course).

I guess I was lucky with the two skips I hired. Both were delivered when the firm said, and were collected the day they stated they would as well.

Mind you, the skip hire firm does have it's own waste transfer station, so would have taken the skip back to their yard to sort the waste into various types.

  • Well, the skip is still here  I tried calling the skip company four times yesterday afternoon but got no answer from either of the numbers the kitchen fitter gave me. I have legal expenses insurance on my household policy so gave their helpline a call. They told me that I wouldn't be legally entitled to claim storage fees for every day they fail to pick the skip up so threatening them with that would be pointless (as I suspected). He believes I have a case for breach of contract, however because I paid the kitchen fitter to provide the skip, I would have to pursue him and not the skip company. His recommendation is that I put a deadline in writing and if it still hasn't gone by then, come back and they'll start looking into legal action. I finally got to speak with the skip company this morning and they corroborated what my kitchen fitter had already told me. He says that he had a driver out yesterday who couldn't find me, despite the detailed directions the kitchen fitter gave them, and they've been out again this morning and still can't find me. What's even more baffling is that they sent the driver who dropped it off in the first place! I told them I wanted it picked up by 4pm and he's said he'll get the driver to call me. If I haven't heard anything by 2pm, I'll text the skip company to tell them that I'll be seeking legal advice if it hasn't been picked up by 4pm. Unfortunately their website doesn't give an email address and they have no social media so I have no other immediate way of putting anything in writing to them. Anyway, if it's still on my drive at 4pm, I shall be emailing my kitchen fitter to advise him I'll be taking further action if it's not removed by 03/11 (21 days after the collection request was made) and sending a copy by recorded delivery to the skip company. Hopefully that'll motivate them as I have no doubt the kitchen fitter will want to take similar action against them.

At the moment our car is parked outside my neighbour's house. The problem with this is that it blocks parking for any visitors which may become a source of irritation the longer this goes on. I'm not willing to fall out with my neighbour over something so ridiculously easy to resolve.

I've hired skips on a couple of occasions myself and have had no problems whatsoever. I don't know what's going on with this shower of turds.

It'll cost them to dump the waste so they won't touch it. Bit of an empty threat really.
