Conveyancing Solicitor asking for identity proof - again!

Hi, found a number of threads on providing identity proof, but my specific query is, how often do you need to do this?
I haven’t changed my name or address since the last time I used this solicitor, do they need identity check on each time you instruct them?
Are there anti-money laundering rules on this, or is it up to the solicitor?
It is a bit of a pain as I’m not local to them, I’d have to use another solicitor or JP.

Depends when you last used them, the file may now be in archive and they'd like proof again rather than recall a file. It can't be that much of a pain can it?

Yes, the rules require them to check regularly, otherwise you could just be assuming the identity of their previous client. When was the last time you provided them with ID?

    Looks like 18 months ago.
Well... I think finding another solicitor, making an appointment, and paying them is a pain. It’s probably the paying them bit I like least!

That's probably what your employer thinks (or says?) every morning as you turn up to work.....
  • It sounds as though your solicitor doesn't accept photocopy ID. Most national law firms now offer an online ID check as clients aren't based locally anymore.

Might be worth checking to see if they offer an onoine ID checking service.

Well it is photocopies they request, just that they have to be taken and certified by a solicitor.
I’ll look into online checking, thanks. Its not mentioned in the docs though.

Most solicitors will check every time they open a new file - the solicitors I use don't re-do it if you've given them ID within the last 3 months and none of the information has changed.

I have asked, they don’t do online. I have an appointment with a JP!

Can be very bureaucratic.. their systems may not even flag up to them your previous identity checks or if they do then as above they may have archived papers and place burden back on you. As above.. most companies probably now use electronic checks (which can be done with the credit reference agencies) which will successfully 'verify the identity/address' of client.. but some companies may still use manual methods and have little choice if electronic checks are failed. Ultimately companies and their legal practitioners must have in place the systems that satisfy them that they meet the legislation... so the answer to your question is probably as often as they deem necessary.
