Boots Opticians Rip Off

I dread having to buy glasses.
Nothing suits me and I have a high prescription, so that doesn't help my "look" and it is expensive to get decent quality lenses.
One thing I find useful is wearing contact lenses to choose frames. Also gives me a reason to have time to think and return another day if I have had to take my disposable lenses out for an eye test.0 -
I honestly think that choosing glasses is better done on a different visit to the optician. By the time I've gone through the tests , especially if you've waited around a while I'm not always in the mood to start trying on frames .0

I agree, but don't by my glasses from the place where the test is done anyway. I have a test at Specsavers as their owner is a very good optician who also works for the hospital and I always book her, even if it means a wait. Then I buy from Asda, where four pairs, with lighter lenses all round, cost just a few pounds more as two pairs from Specsavers with only one thinner lens per pair.0 -

Just the antiglare coating makes the white rings less obvious and lighter lenses help even more. Asda include the more expensive lenses if your prescription requires them (which your would).0 -

So, just an update for anybody interested. What I didn’t realise was that the ticket price on the frames in Boots includes basic lenses. And then there is an additional cost in small print for the framing of varifocal lenses, on top of the lens price. Yes, the mark up on the frames alone is still phenomenal. (i.e. three times the price!) and the mark up on the lenses is higher than elsewhere, but at least now I have a break down I feel less ripped off and more clued in. For all that, I don’t think I will be going back to Boots Opticians. The mark up is too high for my liking. Still, it seems that there are lots of Boots fans here who are happy to pay that difference.
Fwiw, I like my new glasses and am happy with them, expensive as they are. It’s clear that varifocals are MUCH more expensive than I thought they would be and seem to be priced in more complicated way, but I have got used to them quickly and I like wearing them. So I had better get used to (even more) expensive glasses. -0-0-0 -
