How can I find a gardener?

Seriously, since moving to my new house, I have never thought finding tradesman would be such a difficult job. On more than 3 separate occasions each, I have looked for someone to do landscaping, build custom shelving and now general gardening. Each occasion the person either arranges a time and never shows up or shows up, quotes then I never hear from them.

I am looking for a gardener to do no more that cut the grass, hedges and remove weeds. I have used Checkatrade, Rated People and even Schpock only for each person to do one of the previously mentioned. I even found someone on Facebook who I thought was the perfect person - old lady who seemingly had attention to detail and could make the garden looking pretty by planting and maintaining flowers. More than what I was looking for. Showed up only to then send a message to say she's too busy at the moment to take on more work.

Is there a site, app or anything anyone can recommend to me to find a gardener?

Try your local garden center, ( not a chain store) I know we have business cards from previous staff members that have left to move into landscaping. By the sounds of it a decent handyman may also be enough to fit the bill of your requirements best recommend by friends
  • Do you have a local NextDoor community? If so you could ask on there for recommendations.

I'd also try Scouts. Explorer Scouts tend to have a supply of healthy young teens, with expensive driving lessons to pay for, who can operate a shovel with minimal instruction.
They also have a network of associates who can drive & parents who may know how to make bookshelving or even steer Scout labour in landscaping.
  • Try local FB community groups for recommendations, we moved to a new areaand there are forever people asking / recommending, I've found some tradespeople several times this way very successfully. Try searching with the first part of your postcode for groups.
