Quick question on outstanding store card

My late partner had a high street store card with an outstanding balance of £570. The store has written to me saying as the account was not covered with payment protection the balance is due from the estate.
As she only had bank funds of only a couple hundred which went towards funeral costs. We didn't go through probate and there is no will, so there is nothing in the pot to pay this debt.
How should I approach it with them?

Firstly, I'm sorry for your loss.
I would just continue to inform them that there are no funds available and they will not receive anything. There is no estate to pay anything from, so it is a non-starter for the store card company. Sadly they aren't geared up for responding in these situations and will keep sending standard letters.
If it goes on, then send a recorded delivery letter to their customer services dept detailing all conversations with the company. Also let them know how this has affected you as a recently bereaved person.
