In Scotland, the probate process is called "confirmation". From what I've read, it is worth getting a solicitors help with this for large (> £36k) estates.
I've cancelled the SO now. Will look into tracing the money.

Have tracked the company down. It was originally called the Will Writing Company. It is now the Estate Management Company, after a take over/merger.
