House purchase pre pay meter help

Hi,

I am looking for advice on how to get rid of pre pay meters.

I have just bought a property which is fitted with both gas and electric pre pay meters on the standard N Power tariff. (Very expensive)

I am moving from rented property and don’t have my own supplier to transfer, I need advice on what I do in order to get rid of the meters, is it a case of finding the best tariff (energy club says AVRO) and setting up an account with them and they change the meter or do I need to get N power to take the meters out and then switch to another supplier. I don’t know if the smaller suppliers actually change meters ?

Im pretty new to this so it may seem a silly question, the last thing I want is to get “conned” by n power into a contract to get them removed.

It’s a week before I get the keys to the property and N power have already started sending me letters stating that they have created an account under “occupier”.

Any advice appreciated thanks.

It's important that as soon as the property is yours, you contact n'power to advise them of your occupation and give them them meter readings - Only when they've sent you a 'Welcome Letter' are you are free to Switch to another supplier.

Don't know specifically about Avro, but some of the newer, smaller suppliers just won't get involved in meter changes
  • Are they traditional ie key and/or card meters or Smart PAYG meters? If they are Smart the supplier can change them to credit meters without removing the old meter.

As other poster says, register your account with the current supplier, give meter readings and check if there is any debt on meter and if its a traditional one get a new Key/card from the current supplier so your top ups don't get used for previous owners debts.

If you want to switch to another supplier best thing is to ring them rather than do an online application because not all suppliers will put you on a credit tariff if the property has PAYG meters
