How do I stop bad odour from under kitchen sink

I dismantled the pipework under the sink, also fed from the dishwasher and it took me an hour to connect it up again, there is slight stress on the bottom pipe, the u tube and it started slipping apart. Anyway I managed to sort it but am never going to unscrew that lot again for cleaning

I have used bicarb and vinegar in the past, useless. Bleach and boiling water, ok for a while and just now flora disinfectant and boiling water. Is there a routine that I can follow in order to keep the under sink plastic piping fresh and clean. The outflow is slightly upwards before it goes through the wall and down to the outside drains

Stop pouring fats food waste and such down the sink!

Use something to catch bits and then bin them.

You shoudl also not have to dissasemble everything. Just the u bend(s). Good ones usually have a removable bit for cleaning.

oh fgs, I am the one who wipes any fat away with kitchen roll before using the dishwasher, nor do I ever put food down the sink, I catch any bits in a strainer, always. I am talking about the everyday gunk that appears in these modern white plastic pipes and yes I did disassemble the u bend
  • Hi Kittie!

I found that allowing a good hot sinkful of water - (not boiling) with a tablespoon of washing soda and some fairy run through last thing before bed worked on our old sink. We used to do a bit in both sinks because we had a 1 1/2 sink with a slow drain (gentle slope) on one side.

Kittie - I have some very old drains (old house) and used to have real issues with this and blockage. Lovely "drain man" advised that it wasn't the U-bend but odours from where the pipe connected with the main drain outside "wafting" . Keeping that clear and a few times a year flushing with a pressure washing has solved this- might be worth a try if you can, certainly easier than unscrewing things (for me). Good luck :)

If you can, try to fit a HepvO.

  • every week I pour bicarb down the sink and then a good dollop of vinegar and let it fizz away for five minutes then zoflora concentrated not diluted helps it smell a bit better

I add old fashioned washing soda crystals before the bicarbonate and vinegar, then after a while flush it through with boiling water.

When I had to dismantle the trap to retrieve a ring I was surprised at just how clean all the pipe work was.

There is something wrong with your set-up if outside odours are coming into the house.

Get a plumber to make sure it's actually draining properly. All the stuff your bunging down the sink won't get very far before the reaction has finished so it's probably not actually doing anything if not draining properly.

I`ll be buying washing soda today, the last lot turned into a solid lump. I think your solution will work fine brambleberry. Also thanks everyone for the related op suggestions. Apodemus. reassuring post, nice to read that

I am always cleaning down all the house plugholes, only me and toothpaste always goes down the loo but every pipe gets that black gunky stuff. I have brushes handy in each area and it is a routine job
