Healthcare, hubby and Tax

Options
Hi guys

I get personal healthcare through work and pay for my hubby too.

I know I should pay tax on my benefit but do I pay tax on my hubby's benefit?

Came home to a letter stating I owe £300 due to underpayment of private healthcare
Fat and proud lol

  • You have to pay tax on what your employer declared on your P11D form, which they should have given you a copy of

If you are unsure what the P11D amount includes you need to ask your employer.

if you are asking should you pay tax on your husband's care costs paid for by your employer then the answer is yes, of course you should, it is part of your employment benefits package, ie part of your salary

if you are asking why do you have an underpayment of tax, then check what year the letter says the underpayment relates to and then check what amounts were shown on your P11D for that year against the costs of your and husband's policies

My answer is assuming that your job entitles you for healthcare cover for yourself only and that you have paid an extra premium to include your husband? If so -

It depends on how you pay for your husband. If you pay from your pay after tax and nic, then you should not be paying any extra tax and the cost of your husbands healthcare should not be included on your P11d.

If you pay for your husbands healthcare via a salary sacrifice scheme, then the cost of his healthcare should be included on your P11d and you should pay tax on this cost.
