Butter prices

Has anyone noticed how expensive pure butter is to buy...£4 for 500g or what I used to call a pound of butter. This is disgraceful. I love butter and would rather have nothing on my bread than use those chemically-filled "spreads" but I cannot understand why butter is just so expensive, particularly when it is the "locally-produced" brands like Ballyrashane and Dromona. Anyone any ideas of why the price hike?

I always buy Sainsbury's own, and noticed that a large block had gone up to £2.90, I always use this for baking as I can taste the difference. I did read a few weeks ago that the price would go up and supply might be difficult as we get closer th Christmas, but I'm sorry try as I might I can't remember why, sorry.Fibro-Warrior0

Apparently butter prices are an election issue in the Czech Republic, so it's not just here0

I also heard on the BBC World Service only yesterday there is also a butter shortage in France.
Seems like a good idea to stock up and freeze your Christmas requirements now.The more I live, the more I learn.

Even before the European shortage I found butter in NI to be 20-30p per pack more than at home in London. I was shocked at how expensive it is over there. Must be even worse now.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
I remember many years ago the EU had a butter mountain.Charities where selling it for next to nothing .I guess its gone now."Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many"0

Falling production of milk because of low prices.
It seems we are paying the cost for cheap milk in supermarkets as a lot of dairy farmers have pulled out of the market in the last few years
